    I guess US politicians managed to twist the meaning of terrorism such
    that many people will assume it requires bombs or other physical
    threats.

That's what it means.  US politicians have stretched the term to
apply to minor crimes like chaining yourself to a stairway, and that
is a very bad thing.  We need to fight the tendency to lower
the threshold of "terrorism".

Since you have already published the article, I can only hope people
react to it well.
