Thanks to all of you for bringing this discussion to free/libre software
movement.

I'm just a volunteer of the free/libre software movement, but I can
speak to the extent of what I have studied so far.

We free/libre software activists think that patents should be
illegal/void for functional data (that is: software, software
documentation, text fonts, and many other things that would be longer to
explain now, but which are generally used for practical purposes).

For historical reference: We have a campaign against such type of
patents:

Currently, it's more common for us to organize ourselves in the
LibrePlanet.org wiki:

Particularly, we do so by creating action items. You can check the
current action items here (and you can also copy them and use the same
content to create your own in the same wiki, as long as it follows the
LibrePlanet Founding Documents):

... and of course, do not submit/adapt copyrighted work for which
there's no proven permission to do so.

As an addendum: I recall seeing a speech saying that patents on
functional data can also make people lose jobs or organizations turn
bankrupt. I'll try to find this reference, and reply back once I have
found it.
