Reverse engineering binary firmware

I think it would be useful to start an organized effort to
reverse-engineer binary-only firmware. When the binary is released
under a free software license, there is no legal obstacle.
What do you think of this idea?
If it is a good idea, would some of you like to identify a list of
high priority targets for this activity?
They should be binary-only firmware programs released under free
licenses, for important products or product lines. It would be good
to have between 5 and 20 items in the list.
