Press CTRL+ALT+F2; it should show you a terminal login. Log in and enter
"startx" on the command line. Press CTRL+ALT+F1 to enter the desktop if
you have to.

The video card never prevents booting on GNU/Linux, but you have trouble
loading graphical applications.
