One way out of the outdated free software scenario is: GNU Guix and
GuixSD. :)

GNU Guix for those who want to use updated packages in their current system
distribution.

GuixSD for updated free/libre distros.

Both support roll-backs and have ability to install multiple versions of
same package (for different scenarios). Package recipes can also be made
and shared by the users themselves.
